Federal Court Cases Demand New Laws Concerning Cyberbullying

The most recent of the federal court cases brought up under charges of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) is Lori Drew v. United States.  This law was the last line of defense in relation to wicked acts of cyberbullying.  The Wild West frontier of the Internet is quickly coming to a head because parents demand that their children are protected from cyber-crime and cyberbullying.

In all likelihood, this recent federal court case will pave the way for new legislation.  In May 2009, President Barack Obama announced the position of Federal Cybersecurity to be put under scrutiny and more directly in the hands of the White House.  Although most of the immediate attention is due to the recent security breach in U.S. government computers thought to be related to North Korea, this movement could also mean better protection domestically. Missouri Court Passes the Buck to Supreme Court on Cyberbullying

When Lori Drew was brought before a Missouri Court, there was no standard addressing cyberbullying or in this case cyber-harassment.  The difference between these two terms is that cyberbullying occurs between children or teens, while cyber-harassment or cyberstalking is the result of an adult harassing another adult or exploiting a child. Cyberbullying: Technology Takes Bullying to a Scary New Level

Bullying has been around since the beginning of time. Parents, you may remember you or your friends being bullied as a child. No doubt you remember the hurt, frustration, and sadness it caused.

These days, however, bullying isn’t just happening on the playground or at the bus stop, it’s happening on the Internet and on your kids’ cell phones, making it possible to bully a child 24 hours a day and include thousands of participants.

Cyberbullying follows children around the clock, and into the safety of their homes. Many times, kids are scared to tell their parents about cyberbullying, thinking they will be blamed, lose their Internet privileges, or that their parents will call the school or other parents, probably making the bullying worse.
